Ocean Etudes

“Ocean Etudes” is a series of ink wash on canvas, worked transparently like watercolor. Photos are sourced from aquariums including Birch Aquarium in San Diego. Each work is an experiment with water-based techniques, using the fluid effects of ink to compliment the texture and high contrast lighting of underwater environments.

INTO THE DEEP

“Into the Deep” highlights ocean species and the ecosystems in need of preservation.  Like outer space, the ocean remains unexplored and highly exploited. Each painting features a particular species or a collection of underwater animals suspended in starry backgrounds. The series intends to elevate the wonder and awe experienced when witnessing these underwater worlds.

CELESTIALS

“Celestials” depicts animals in fantastical settings, surrounded by galaxies and nebula. The themes explore cycles of life and death, reverence, and respect for all animals. Creatures depicted are endangered or recently extinct like the Southern Black Rhino, Spix Macaw, and Dugong. “Celestials” illustrates domesticated animals, wild animals, and endangered species with colorful extravagance in order to inspire compassion and global efforts toward a sustainable future.

OCEAN NOIR

The French term “noir” translates to the color black or dark and describes the crime fiction characterized by dramatic lighting and bleak settings. Drawing upon the film noir aesthetic, the series “Ocean Noir” is a commentary on human environmental impact. Ink is used exclusively to create high contrast black and white illustrations of pollution, oil spills, overfishing, and the effects of global warming. The series was expanded to include imagery of a hopeful future, with human beings acting to rebuild the oceans, which is reflected in paintings with a touch of color.

LIGHT PLAY

The series “Light Play” includes floral abstractions based on trumpet flowers, roses, tulips, and other botanical subjects. The flowers, which are full-view and extend beyond the painting format, draw attention to the flow and visual movement of petals. Each painting is an exercise in abstract composition, balancing the weight of organic form, patterns, and light balance. The colors of these botanic explorations are enhanced and even swapped for supernaturally vibrant hues. The play of shadows on the flower surface invites the viewer to notice hidden shapes and forms in high contrast renderings.
